What is Reiki

Understanding Reiki: A Holistic Energy Healing Practice.

Reiki, a powerful energy healing technique, has gained popularity in recent years for its ability to promote relaxation, balance, and overall well-being. Rooted in ancient Japanese traditions, Reiki has evolved into a widely recognized practice, helping individuals achieve harmony in mind, body, and spirit.

Reiki, pronounced "ray-kee," is a non-invasive healing modality that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word "Reiki" combines two Japanese characters: "Rei," meaning universal or divine, and "Ki," which represents life energy or vital force. Together, they form a holistic system focused on channeling and balancing energy for the purpose of healing and more.

Reiki operates on the belief that an unseen life force energy flows through all living beings, impacting their overall health and well-being. Reiki practitioners tap into this universal life force energy and serve as conduits, allowing the energy to flow through them and into the recipient's body. By harmonizing and balancing the energy, Reiki aims to restore physical, emotional, and spiritual balance.

Reiki is often used as a complementary therapy alongside traditional medical treatments. While it does not replace medical intervention, Reiki can provide valuable support to conventional approaches. It promotes relaxation and stress reduction, which can strengthen the body's ability to heal and cope with illness. Many US hospitals and healthcare facilities now offer Reiki as a part of integrative medicine programs (especially cancer wards).  Reiki is not based on any religious belief system and can be practiced by anyone, regardless of their spiritual background and belief that it works is not required.

What is a Reiki session like?

During an in-person Reiki session, the client lies on a massage table fully clothed.  The practitioner's intention to heal coupled with the Reiki initiation process, activates the flow of energy (Ki). The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the recipient's body, systematically moving through different positions.  Sometimes the practitioner never touches the client during a session.  A session will never be the same twice as the practitioner is guided as to where the energy needs to be focused each time. The recipient may experience sensations such as warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation during the treatment (clients can often drift off into a deep relaxing sleep). Reiki is different from other 'touch' therapies in that there is no physical pressure (other than light touch), massage or manipulation.

Reiki works regardless of proximity, sessions can be performed remotely via Zoom or the phone or just at a prearranged time ('time-shifted') without any client practitioner interaction during the session. A practitioner can also use a stuffed animal or doll to represent the client in order to perform a remote Reiki session.

I am very skeptical about any healing modality and I simply will not use it in my practice or receive it personally until I have evidence that it works. I have witnessed enough to know this works. I have and continue to personally receive Reiki sessions since 2020.
